Becoming a fire fighter?

Hi, just doing abit of research for my partner, he wants to become a fire fighter. How long is the training & what is the wage during & after training. What are the hours & is it enjoyable. Any other info that you have would be fab. He is very fit & is currently serving in the royal marines (please don't give me a hard time about him leaving, he don't enjoy it no more)
