What do they throw for home run derby?

ive been watching reruns of the home run Derby's and it seems like their throwing curve I'm not sure... just looks like the form of there fingers on the ball looks like a curve ball and the hitters positions are far back in the box cause that's what you do on curve .. also do they have a choice or something? I'm prolly all wrong ha ha
