When Jesus ascended into heaven he rose up into the sky?

This tells me that heaven is a physical location in our universe because if it wasn’t he would have simply vanished or phased out of our plane of existence. But no, he began a journey skyward toward a destination of unknown distance. So, where did he go? Did he just go high enough until he was out of sight and then go a different direction, like under the ocean, or did he leave the Earths atmosphere and journey into the solar system? This also raises the question of how fast Jesus can travel in outer space which would help to determine the distance of the Earth to heaven. Can any Christians help me out?
